SQUATTER?

Squatter? What is squatter?

The squatter can be defined as a residential area that has been developed without a lawsuit over land and / or permission from the authorities for development; due to their illegal or semi-legal status, infrastructure and services are often inadequate. There are basically three defining features that help us understand squat solutions: Physical, Social and legal with the reasons behind them interrelated.

1. Physical Characteristics

Because of its "unauthorized" status, squatters get services and infrastructure below the minimum level. Such services are social networks and infrastructure, such as water, sanitation, electricity, roads and drainage; schools, health centers, marketplaces and more.

2. Social Characteristics

Most squatter settlements belong to the lower income group, either working as wage laborers or in various informal sectors. On average, most get paid at or near the minimum wage level. But the level of household income can also be high as it may generate income and part-time jobs.

3. Legal Characteristics

A key feature that illustrates squatter settlements is the lack of land they build on their homes. This could be vacant government or public land, or marginal land parcels such as railway collapse or "unwanted" marshy land. Therefore, when the land is not being used by the owner "productively", it is allocated by the squatters to build a house. It should be noted here that in many parts of Asia, landlords can "rent" their land at a nominal cost to families or families, with unofficial or unilateral arrangements, which are not legally binding.
