It is clear with some reflection that the experience through the Covid-19 pandemic will surely teach us a lot day by day. Many of us will realize the importance of self-discipline, inspired by the many messages and tips for reconnecting with others, gaining new skills, exercising and more. We must have heard everything.
For some, the experience will bring out the best in human behavior and thinking - from volunteering and restraint to tolerance. Most importantly it creates deep gratitude for being alive and well. The immense self-awareness we gain and the emphasis not on the meaning of life characterized by immortality, can be the greatest lesson of all.
As we marvel at how we managed to get through the MCO, some behavioral changes can lead to changes in social norms.
1. Avoid crowded spots
We may be more careful about visiting crowded or closed areas in places such as theaters and stadiums or even public transport. It may be that Malaysians who are popular during the weekends walking around a crowded shopping mall with infants and children may turn into single-family families to enjoy quality time together. Social distance is expected to be practiced while in the queue. Of course, the way we eat with friends changes because of fear of getting infected. Dining out will take a short time because it has to be kept clean.
2. Keep hygiene
There is no point in announcing to everyone that Malaysia has the best food in the world as we continue to tolerate dirty restaurants with bad food operators who ignore hygiene and protection. If we want to draw people in with our unique collection of cuisines, it's time to emulate our southern neighbors with strict hygiene standards. A major downfall of the Covid-19 experience was the change in the mindset of Malaysians who were very proud to be food lovers. On the other hand, people may be more inclined to bring a nutritious and nutritious lunch. Who knows, lunch boxes in the past might be our trend again.
3. Watch out for fake news
After experiencing a lot of fake news during this crisis, even the people among us in the future will be more cautious in accepting the news, especially in the face of fear and hatred.
4. Less travelling
The private sector will surely reduce air travel for their executives. Suddenly simple email communication will replace face-to-face communication and will look very effective. The public sector can also follow it with sophisticated video conferencing and webinars are a common sight.
5. Online Education
In addition to the increasing popularity of e-commerce, digitalization of education may be accelerated following the tendency for e-learning created during this MCO period.
6. Drones and robots
The use of drones and robots in our daily lives may be enhanced and may become a standard feature in communities around the world, in areas such as security surveillance, inspection procedures, and even food delivery. In Malaysia, working from home may be a habit, which may indirectly result in less dependence on foreign domestic help.
7. Doctor-On-Call
In our own country, how health care can change, with some segments choosing e-consulting accessible at their fingertips. The public health system should also pay close attention to the social and physical environment as a determinant of health in the event of an outbreak of infectious disease in the future. The housing system and work environment as well as the recognition that cultural and religious support networks are crucial in shaping the customs and traditions for better health care will be good public health approaches in the future. The focus on their psychological health needs influenced by the overall experience of the Covid-19 can help governments recognize the need for clear mental health leadership in our country.
While we are still facing this pandemic challenge, we can also take this opportunity to face potential changes in our lives, once these difficult times are over.
The suffering of the outbreak is real, but it will also come to an end and we will be waking up to a better day.
